Promoting British Values at Erdington Academy

At Erdington Academy, we actively promote and model the importance of our shared British Values.

Home Our Academy British Values

Across the curriculum, we embed the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. While these are core values, we believe that being British encompasses much more. Our broad and balanced curriculum prepares students for life in modern Britain.

We actively promote and encourage student voice across the academy. Below are examples of how these values are embedded in academy life.

Democracy

Students develop an understanding of democracy by taking part in decision‑making processes within the academy. They are encouraged to contribute to student voice activities both collectively, through tutor time discussions, and individually, through involvement in the House Council. Students also share their views through the Student Council and student questionnaires.

Through a varied curriculum, students develop respect for the democratic process and gain a clear understanding of how they can influence decision‑making within the academy community.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they govern the classroom, the academy, or the country, is consistently reinforced at Erdington Academy. Academy rules reflect and support the laws of the land, helping students understand their purpose and importance.

Our Behaviour for Learning Policy supports students in developing a strong understanding of responsibility and consequences, as well as an appreciation of how the law contributes to safety and wellbeing. Visits from authorities, such as the police school liaison officer, further strengthen students’ respect for public institutions.

Individual Liberty

At Erdington Academy, students are encouraged to make positive choices within a safe and supportive environment. We help them develop the ability to make informed decisions, understand their rights and personal freedoms, and exercise these safely.

Through opportunities such as selecting appropriate levels of challenge in lessons and participating in a wide range of extracurricular activities, students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and personal development.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is central to our academy values. Students learn that their actions impact not only their own rights, but also those of others. All members of the academy community are expected to treat one another with respect at all times.

This is reflected in our academy motto: “All of us, all of the time.” Assemblies, tutor activities, and the House System reinforce the importance of respect in everyday academy life.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Erdington Academy reflects the diversity of modern Britain, and we place great emphasis on promoting understanding and appreciation of different cultures, faiths, and beliefs. Assemblies and tutor activities explore themes of diversity, including celebrations and events from a range of cultural and religious backgrounds.

Our curriculum reinforces respect and tolerance, and all members of the academy community are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences.

Opinions or behaviours that conflict with fundamental British Values, whether expressed by students, staff, or parents and carers, are actively challenged.
