Proud to be an FMAT Academy

A huge well done to students who took part in the Debate Mate Cup Final last week! 🙌

Students take on hot topics at Debate Mate Cup Final – from fast fashion to streaming

Students from Erdington took part in the Debate Mate Cup Final last week, showcasing powerful public speaking and critical thinking skills.

Our partnership with this prestigious programme, which provides opportunities for students from all backgrounds to build confidence and develop essential life skills, is part of our wider commitment to enriching lives and transforming futures.

The event, held at the University of Birmingham, brought together teams from schools across the West Midlands who tackled challenging motions around fast fashion, streaming vs the cinema, and whether major sporting events should drive urban development.

PSHE Curriculum Lead Miss Duncanson said: “The whole experience is amazing and the Cup Day is Epic, celebrating the culmination of the programme.

“Erdington Academy was represented by two debate teams, both of which performed exceptionally well, securing 2–1 victories in their respective debates. Each motion required careful analysis, structured argument and confident delivery, and the pupils demonstrated impressive depth of knowledge, clarity of expression and the ability to respond thoughtfully under pressure.”

Principal Simon Mallett added: “We are really proud of our students who have grown in confidence over the course of this programme, showing how well they can think on their feet and work as a team. Debating gives our young people the chance to develop vital skills which will prepare them for life beyond the classroom, as they move on to higher education and work.”
