Winning posters revealed after British Science Week challenge!

The winners of this year’s Trust‑wide British Science Week challenge have now been announced, receiving prizes for their creative and scientifically informed solutions to local environmental problems.

Judges said the best entries demonstrated exceptional creativity, scientific understanding and thoughtful engagement with real‑world challenges.

Running from March 6 to March 15, this year’s theme “Curiosity: What’s Your Question?” encouraged learners to think deeply, investigate boldly and explore the world around them with genuine scientific curiosity.

One of the central activities invited students to design a poster explaining their chosen environmental problem and the science behind their proposed solution. The response across the Trust was exceptional, with each school selecting a winning entry and awarding prizes.

At Erdington Academy, the winning poster focused on improving recycling across Birmingham. The student explored how the local council could better support residents, including ideas such as community drop‑off points and mobile collection services.

Fairfax Academy’s winning entry centred on protecting Newhall Valley by highlighting the vital role of bees as pollinators. The student proposed practical ways to support bee populations, including planting wildflower meadows, creating bee hotels and introducing no‑mow zones.

Smith’s Wood Academy submitted the highest number of entries — an impressive 20 — with the winning poster tackling the global challenge of ocean pollution. The student explored how small, everyday changes can collectively make a significant difference.

The overall Trust winner was Fairfax Academy, whose student received a £25 Amazon voucher for their outstanding work on protecting Newhall Valley and supporting local pollinators.
