Dear Parents and Carers,
Becoming a No Phone School
From this term, we will be operating as a No Phone School. This means that mobile phones should not be seen or heard at any point during the school day.
This change reflects a growing national focus on reducing the impact of mobile phone use on young people and supporting students to engage fully with their education.
Research continues to highlight concerns about the effect of excessive mobile phone use on the developing adolescent brain, particularly while the frontal cortex, which is responsible for decision-making, attention and self-regulation, is still maturing. Mobile phones can adversely affect students’ ability to concentrate, maintain focus and apply themselves fully to their learning.
While we have not experienced significant issues with mobile phones in school, we believe this change will further discourage inappropriate use and help students enjoy a school day that is free from unnecessary distractions.
Expectations for All Students
Students may bring a mobile phone to school if necessary; however, once they enter the school site, their phone must not be used. It should be switched off and put away in their bag.
This rule applies gate-to-gate. Once students enter through either the side gate or the back gate, mobile phones are out of bounds until they leave through the school gates at the end of the day.
What Happens if a Phone is Seen or Heard?
If a mobile phone is seen or heard during the school day, a member of staff will confiscate the device. The phone will be taken to Reception and must be collected by a parent or carer. Students will not be permitted to collect confiscated phones themselves.
We ask for your support in reinforcing this expectation with your child before they arrive at school each day.
Arrangements for Different Year Groups
Years 8 to 11
Students in Years 8 to 11 will be expected to manage this requirement independently. Phones should be switched off and kept out of sight for the duration of the school day.
Year 7
To support our youngest students as they transition into secondary school, Year 7 students will be issued with a secure mobile phone pouch from next week.
On arrival at school, students will place their phone inside the pouch, which will then remain locked throughout the school day. At the end of the day, a member of staff will unlock the pouch, allowing students to access their phone once they have left school.
We believe this additional support will help Year 7 students establish positive habits from the beginning of their secondary school journey.
We are committed to providing a calm, focused and positive learning environment in which all students can thrive. We hope that this new approach will help students remain fully engaged in their lessons, strengthen social interactions during the school day and reduce unnecessary distractions.
