Dear Parents and Carers
Black History Month at Erdington Academy
Throughout October, Erdington Academy will be celebrating Black History Month, an important opportunity to recognise, celebrate and learn about the achievements, experiences and contributions of Black people throughout history and in our communities today.
Black History Month is about more than looking at the past. It helps our students develop a deeper understanding of diversity, equality and inclusion, while celebrating the rich cultural heritage that helps shape modern Britain. By learning about inspirational role models and significant achievements, students are encouraged to appreciate different perspectives and understand the positive impact that individuals can have on society.
This year’s theme is “Celebrating Local Heroes.” Students will explore the lives and contributions of Black individuals who have made a difference within Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. These local heroes have shown determination, resilience, leadership and service to their communities, providing powerful examples for our young people to learn from and aspire to.

At Erdington Academy, we are committed to creating a community where every student feels valued, respected and empowered to succeed. Black History Month supports our school values by encouraging students to:
- Show respect for different cultures, experiences and perspectives.
- Demonstrate ambition by learning from inspiring role models who have overcome barriers to achieve success.
- Build community by celebrating the diversity that strengthens our school and local area.
- Develop character through understanding, empathy and appreciation of others.
Supporting British Values
Our Black History Month programme also promotes the British Values that are central to life in modern Britain:
- Mutual Respect – recognising and valuing the contributions of people from all backgrounds.
- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – appreciating the diversity of our society.
- Individual Liberty – understanding the importance of equal opportunities and freedom.
- Democracy and the Rule of Law – exploring how individuals have worked to create fairer and more inclusive communities.
We look forward to welcoming you to our celebration evening and thank you for your continued support.
Yours faithfully
