Bronze DofE students complete their Qualifying Expedition

After months of preparation, training and determination, Erdington Academy’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students have successfully completed their Qualifying Expedition.

As expected, the expedition put the traditional DofE essentials to the test — navigation, map-reading and campcraft — but it also threw in some more unusual challenges. Alongside cooking on stoves and plotting routes, students also found themselves building a working bridge and even constructing a “Flintstones-style” car from poles and ropes.

DofE Manager Mr Broughton said it was the moment everything came together, adding: “Assessors were incredibly impressed with the determination, positive attitude, and teamwork shown by all participants.

“Completing the Qualifying Expedition is a significant achievement and represents the culmination of many months of preparation, training, and commitment.”

The experience follows their initial training at Beaudesert Activity Centre and, as part of the assessment, students demonstrated a wide range of practical skills. They were responsible for managing their own campcraft, including preparing meals on camping stoves, organising equipment and keeping their campsite in good order. Navigation remained a central element, with students using their map-reading and route-planning skills to move between checkpoints and navigate unfamiliar terrain.

Students also explored traditional communication methods by learning and using Semaphore and Morse code to relay messages.

Leaders and assessors noted the students’ consistent effort and organised approach throughout the expedition.

Completing the Qualifying Expedition is a key milestone in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, and Erdington Academy congratulates all participating students on reaching this stage of their DofE journey.
