Proud to be an FMAT Academy

Parent Letter 8/1/2026

8 January 2026

Dear Parent/Carer

While we are in this current cold snap can I take this opportunity to remind you of our cold weather closure processes.

Birmingham City Council does not make decisions about closures of academies in the case of extreme weather, if the decision to close Erdington is required, the decision is made in consultation between myself, the Site Manager, key leaders and the FMAT CEO or FMAT Director of Education. If you hear other schools in the city are closed, please do not assume that means all schools are closed.

If such a decision to close the Academy is made, key members of staff will be contacted to ensure that a notice is placed on the Academy website and that messages are sent to parents/carers through the My Child at School app, we aim to try and make this decision by 7:30 am wherever possible

Please be assured that considered into our decision to open, is the likelihood of us being able to remain open for the day, but when considering closure, we will take a proportionate approach to managing the risk that the poor weather poses to both staff and students.

If the weather worsens during the school day and a decision to close the Academy is required, reasonable effort will be made to contact parents/carers to advise them that the Academy has closed through the same channels as mentioned above.

There are a number of factors that will influence any decision taken to close the Academy and may include:

  1. Can students and staff get to school safely? This may be affected by public transport.
  2. Can students and staff get home safely? If the weather deteriorates further and may prevent staff and students getting home safel
  3. Is the site safe enough for movement between buildings? Other schools may take different views on the slippery conditions dependant on their site layout and individual school buildings
  4. Can enough staff get into school to ensure safe staff to pupil ratios?

In the event of closure the Academy will move to online work for students set via Satchel One.

We would like to thank you for your continued support at this time. Attendance to school is a key element to future success and we will only take the decision to close the Academy after careful consideration and as a last resort.

Yours sincerely

S.Mallett

Principal
