Parental letter – 23.1.2026

January 23, 2026

Dear Parent/Carer,

I am writing to you to share important information about how we support students to make strong academic progress. At our school, we are committed to providing every child with the highest quality education through quality‑first teaching, strong routines, and a range of opportunities that help students become confident, independent learners.

Excellent attendance remains essential to this. Strong attendance is one of the most significant contributors to academic progress, and every missed lesson creates gaps that become increasingly difficult to close. Your support in ensuring your child attends school every day, on time, has a direct and lasting impact on their success.

Timetabled lessons remain the most effective environment for learning for all students in Years 7–11. Teachers are actively addressing gaps identified through assessments and, for Year 11, the November mock exams. Each lesson begins with a Do Now activity designed to revisit key knowledge from the previous lesson or target specific areas identified through assessment. These routines strengthen understanding over time, but they are only effective when students are present and punctual. Arriving late means missing this crucial retrieval practice, which can widen gaps rather than close them.

We are also pleased to offer a wide range of after‑school masterclasses in Maths, English, and Science for all year groups. These sessions provide targeted support, stretch, and challenge, enabling students to deepen their understanding and strengthen key skills. Students are invited based on their individual needs, and attending these sessions can make a significant difference to their confidence and progress. Invitations will be communicated via MCAS, and you will be informed directly if your child is selected to attend. If you have any questions about the masterclasses, please contact k.dixon@erdington.fmat.co.uk

In Year 7, selected students also have the opportunity to take part in the Brilliant Club, an academic enrichment programme that introduces them to university‑style learning. This initiative helps students develop high‑level thinking skills, broaden their aspirations, and build confidence in tackling challenging material.

Homework remains a vital part of every student’s learning journey. Completing homework regularly and to a high standard reinforces classwork, strengthens long‑term understanding, and helps students develop essential study habits. Your support in ensuring homework is completed on time and in an environment free from distractions plays a crucial role in helping your child make strong progress.

Thank you for your continued support in helping all students to be fully prepared, confident, and ready to achieve their best.

Yours sincerely,

S Muschette

Assistant Principal
