Subject: Key Expectations

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope you are well. I am writing to remind you of our key school expectations. Maintaining high standards allows us to provide a safe, positive and focused learning environment for every student. Your support ensures that all students can meet these expectations consistently.

School Day and Punctuality

The school day begins promptly at 8:40am.

  • Students arriving after 8:40am will receive a 25-minute detention.
  • Students arriving after 9:00am will receive a 50-minute detention.

Punctuality is essential for learning and contributes to students’ end-of-year reward eligibility. We kindly ask for your continued support in ensuring your child is punctual and prepared during this important period. Strong attendance and punctuality will enable them to make the most of the high-quality teaching and revision opportunities available during form time as they work towards their final GCSE exams.

Please also be aware of the end of year reward guidelines during this period as lates contribute to negative points:

  • 15 Lates – No Prom
  • 50 negatives and 15 lates – No Alton Towers trip and no Prom
  • Suspensions – No Alton Towers trip, no Prom, and no Leavers’ Lunch

These expectations are in place to encourage students to maintain high standards of behaviour, commitment, and engagement, especially during this crucial time in their academic journey.

At Erdington Academy, we adopt the ‘First time, every time’ strategy. This expectation means that every student must follow reasonable instructions from their teacher the first time they are asked, every time, and without challenge or question.

Following instructions promptly allows lessons to run smoothly, ensures all students can learn without disruption, and promotes a culture of respect and responsibility.

Failure to follow this simple but essential expectation will result in a sanction in line with our behaviour policy.

No-Touching Policy and Banned Items

Erdington Academy operates a strict no-touching policy to ensure student safety. It is crucial students follow the no-touching policy as it is there to safeguard them. Bringing banned items onto school grounds is a serious breach of expectations. Please be aware that students who bring prohibited items into school may lose their place at the academy.

Mobile Phones and Headphones

All mobile phones and headphones must be switched off before entering school grounds.

  • If mobile phones or headphones are seen or heard, they will be confiscated and placed at Reception for collection at the end of the school day.
  • Failure to hand over the item when requested will result in one day in the Refocus Room.
  • If a phone is confiscated twice in an academic term, a letter will be sent home.
  • On the third offence, parents/carers will be required to collect the device in person.

Uniform Expectations

Please ensure your child arrives in full, correct uniform every day. We are still noticing a small number of students attending without the correct items. Uniform expectations include:

  • School shoes must be worn; any student arriving in trainers must change before entering the building.
  • No false eyelashes or fake nails.
  • Skirts must be tailored (loose) and just above the knee—not tight or short fitted.
  • Jewellery is limited to one pair of earrings and one nose stud (no nose rings).
  • Students must bring correct equipment daily, including:
    • Ethos card
    • Blue/black pen
    • Green pen
    • Ruler
    • Scientific calculator

We appreciate your continued support during this crucial time in the academic year in upholding our school standards and supporting your child’s success. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Y Khan
