Dear Parents and Carers,
While preparing to write this letter I spent some time thinking about the last time I had said something kind, something warm, something that might have made a positive difference to somebody else’s day. In such a busy setting like a school (especially a secondary school), it’s sometimes difficult to pause and reflect on the impact that we have on each other’s lives. Yet, as a famous writer once said, we have the power to make each other’s lives light or burdensome, a pleasure or a toil. The words we use are incredibly powerful and have an impact on how we see ourselves and how we see others; the benefits of positive speech cannot be underestimated.
As adults, the language we choose to use around our children and students is significant: we are their role models, the biggest influences on how they perceive the world around them. If we speak kindly and positively, our children emulate us and it strengthens their interactions with others, helping them forge stronger relationships.
The power of positive talk in the home is scientifically proven to have an impact on health and wellbeing- it’s not just about bringing a smile! Positive speech from family helps children develop a strong sense of self-worth; when we use encouraging and affirming language, children are more likely to believe in their abilities and feel confident in their actions. In addition, positive talk helps to reduce anxiety and stress, fostering a more secure and happy environment in the home.
At Erdington Academy, we actively promote positivity through our words and actions. Take our Ethos Card for example: students are recognised and rewarded for kindness to others. This could be through supporting and helping each other or for acts of positivity towards staff and students which not only boosts wellbeing but also helps to build an inclusive, welcoming environment. Students are also encouraged to send thank you cards to each other as a ‘random act of kindness’, acknowledging the good in others and showing their appreciation.
Positivity is catching! Encourage your children today to commit to positivity. They could show gratitude for a friend or family member, pay a compliment or remind someone of what an excellent job they are doing. It takes seconds and has a lasting impact.
Dates:
With the end of term fast approaching, I have some dates and times for your calendars: school will officially be closing for the end of term on Friday, 20th December at 12.40pm. We will reopen to all students on Tuesday, 7th January at 8:40 am.
Yours Sincerely,
Mrs Hillier
Assistant Principal SENCo.
