Year 10 Welcome Letter

11 September 2024

Dear Parent/Carer of Year 10,

I would like to introduce myself to you as Head of Year 10 continuing from previous years and give you some information so that we can work together to support our young people in making a positive start to the new academic year. This is a very exciting time for our students as they enter the next phase of their school life and prepare for the future, and we are lucky to have a great team of staff to support as they begin their GCSE journey.

This Year we have additional support from Mrs Rashid Associate Assistant Principle who comes with a wealth of experience. Miss Ali also joins our team as Assistant Head of Year and supporting me in addressing the day to day needs of the students.

Year 10 is an important year as your child begins their GCSE courses. These two years will shape their future and set them on the path to higher education and successful careers. One of my roles will be to support them, along with subject teachers, pastoral staff and yourselves, in this journey. Ensuring that they are supported so that they can fully embrace and engage with the courses they are studying.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you and your child about what you can expect from me. Your child can expect me to be approachable, I will listen without judgement and ensure that they feel comfortable when approaching me for support. I am fair and will treat all students equally, whether that is rewarding pupils or sanctioning when necessary.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of the role of the form tutor and their relationship with your child. Invariably, the tutor is often the first adult your child may see each day at school, and I think it is important to foster that relationship, improving links between the school and home.

Whilst I am always contactable, I would like to remind you of the importance of the form tutor as a first point of contact with most queries. I will be asking tutors to contact home if there are issues with attendance and behaviour, but also to celebrate the positives with yourselves. Please find the email addresses below of the Year 10 tutors for your reference.

Please be reminded of the uniform standards this year, which can be found on the school website. Can I ask that you support the Academy in ensuring your child is in correct uniform daily and they arrive on site before 8.40am. Uniform can be purchased from Clive Mark School wear and Trutex.

I would also like to remind you about the mobile phone policy. Students will have their phone confiscated if it is seen or heard in school, if you need to contact your child during school time please contact via the main office. Students should use the Head of Year to contact you if they use their mobile to do so it will also be confiscated. We ask for your support in these matters should they arise.

100% attendance is critical in Year 10 to ensure your child is accessing all their lessons at Key Stage 4.  This also includes being on time every day to make the most of their academic year.

Students will be given the opportunity to participate in events and rewards as the year progresses. All events and rewards will be accessible based on performance and expected standards. Students must have good attendance, punctuality, behaviour records and extracurricular contributions to ensure they are able to access the rewards programme. Students that receive -50 negative behaviour points and 15 late marks in the year will not be eligible to attend trips and events.

Extracurricular activities help you achieve points for your house system as well as this they stand out on references. Erdington Academy offer the following extracurricular activities:
