MMR vaccination

21 February 2024

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope you all had a relaxing half term break with your children. It was really pleasing to see that so many families were able to access the £20 food voucher which was sent out by the school to be used over the half term break.

I am sure you will have seen in the local and national media the worrying number of measles cases that have hit the area. Many students have missed their vaccinations when younger but are still able to have a vaccination now that will offer protection from this disease. The vaccination is the MMR vaccination and is to help protect against measles, mumps, and rubella.

The school was recently contacted by the NHS vaccination team to ask if the school was able to facilitate a day where this vaccination can be given in school. The school are happy to help the NHS team as it takes pressure off the doctor’s surgeries, where the vaccination would have to be given. The vaccination is the exact same as it would be if you were to take your child to the doctor. Some parents in the past have raised concerns that the vaccination might contain pork products, I have discussed this with the vaccination team, and they have confirmed that there are NO PORK PRODUCTS contained in the vaccination. The vaccination team have checked NHS records and any child who has not had the vaccination will be eligible to have this vaccination in school on March 19th. A letter from the vaccination team explaining all the details will be sent to parents and a consent form will be attached for parents to sign. If you receive the letter and would like your child to receive the vaccination, please return with the consent section completed. If you do not wish your child to receive the vaccination, please still return the form but with the no consent section completed.

If you would prefer for your child to have the vaccination at an NHS clinic rather than in school, please let me know and I will contact the vaccination team on your behalf. If you would like to discuss the vaccination in more detail with someone from the NHS vaccination team, please also let me know and I will get someone to arrange a time to discuss.

Kind Regards
